Aww...Suupuushan. Taikoubou's greatest friend and riding beast. It's been joked about through the entire series that Suupuu looks like a hippo. It's part true, he does look very much like a hippo, but that's actually not what he is. In the novel, he's called a "nondescript". This is because he's three different creatures combined into one, so there's pretty much no name to describe him. ^^;;; According to chapter 38 of the novel, he has the head of a unicorn, the tail of a wolf, and the body of the dragon. The dragon part makes a little bit more sense at the end of the series, but that's another story.
Now, although Suupuu and Taikoubou are the best of companions, they didn't always get along. At the beginning of their journey, despite Suupuu's rather eager and genki welcome, Suupuu thought Taikoubou was a no good lazy doushi that would get him killed. For the most part, that was kind of true. Taikoubou's rather hokey ways would seem to get them both in trouble, but in the end, he'd seem to pull through and that's what I think really got Suupuu to eventually respect his master.
With the novel though, that's like an entirely different story. Suupuu never speaks or does anything except carry around Jiang Ziya (Taikoubou). It's so sad. Taikoubou also never gets him until Ouma & Co. are attacking Seiki. The reason for this is because there wasn't any need for Taikoubou tog et him beforehand. The novel Ouma & Co. though, they had some magic riding beasts that were around since the beginning of time and their creatures would frighten all of the horses that Taikoubou's troops were riding on; including his own. So Taikoubou went up to Konronzan and spoke to Genshitenson and he gave him Suupuu. Nice gift, man.
But anyway, okay, cool. So Suupuu flies and takes Taikoubou places. Is there anything else he can do? Not really...Until he transforms later in the series! Then, he has various magical abilities and is a much cooler looking creature. That dragon thing also makes sense.
Suupuushan's seiyuu is Masukawa Youichi and his image song is "Kiss Kiss". He also sings along with Taikoubou in "Taikoubou Koko ni Ari".
